HMS Bayano, an armed merchant cruiser, was hit by a torpedo fired from the German submarine, U-27, on 11th  March 1915 and sunk off Corsewall Point, Galloway, Ireland. Nearly 200 of her crew, including John Broom, perished and only 26 survived.
